However, their durability\nalso poses a lot of problems in our environment.&nbsp; Here are the top impacts of plastics in our\nenvironment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Animals<\/strong>\n\u2013 Plastics has been mistaken for food mostly by marine animals and birds.&nbsp; These are trapped in their stomachs and cause\nthem a lot of pain and even death.&nbsp; Plastic\nwastes thrown in bodies of water poses a danger to marine wildlife as they\nusually get trapped on these.<\/li><li><strong>Land<\/strong>\u2013 The quality of soil worsens as\nmore plastics are thrown and buried in the ground.&nbsp; In addition, plastic garbage becomes a\nbreeding ground for diseases as these do not decompose.<\/li><li><strong>Air<\/strong>\u2013 Burned plastics cause air\npollution.&nbsp; The gas released from burned\nplastics can cause respiratory problems to animals and humans.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Given these, various local governments in the Philippines\nhas taken action in implementing plastic ban in their cities and\nmunicipalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Los Banos, Laguna<\/strong> \u2013 started the ban on\nthe use of plastic bags and Styrofoam containers since 2008.<\/li><li><strong>Bacolod\nCity, Bacolod<\/strong> \u2013 started the ban on the use plastic bags last 2011 and\nexpanded the ban last November 2018 to include straws and stirrers.<\/li><li><strong>Baguio\nCity, Benguet<\/strong> \u2013 prohibited establishments from issuing plastic bags and\nStyrofoam containers to its customers.&nbsp;\nThis ban started May 1, 2018.<\/li><li><strong>Pilar (town of Siargao), Surigao del Norte<\/strong>\n\u2013 banned the use of single use plastics last February 2018<strong>.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Boracay Island, Aklan<\/strong> \u2013 since it\nreopened last October 2018, it implemented stricter policies which include the\nban on the use of disposable plastic items.&nbsp;\nHotels, restaurants and resorts are also prohibited from using plastic\nbags.<\/li><li><strong>Some Cities in Metro Manila<\/strong> \u2013\nMuntinlupa City started the ban on the use of plastics, while other cities\nfollowed.&nbsp; In Quezon City, the use of\nplastic bags is regulated by charging consumers P2.00 per plastic bag which\ngoes to their green fund.<\/li><li><strong>Cebu City Hall <\/strong>\u2013 employees and\nconcessionaires are not allowed to use plastic bags, straws, cups, plates,\nutensils, and Styrofoam containers.&nbsp; In\nthe city, there is a twice a week ban on single-use plastics.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>These places have implemented initiatives to protect the\nenvironment.&nbsp; We do not need to wait for\nour Local Government to pass bills to start contributing in saving our\nearth.&nbsp;
