The province of Bohol, in the Philippines, is blessed\nwith mangroves. Bohol have mangrove forests\naround its river systems, waterways and \nislands. Bohol has one of the highest biologically diverse mangrove\necosystems with 26 mangrove species found on its shores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a\ncountry, the Philippines has 47 species out of the 54 species of true\nmangroves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mangroves\nare salt-tolerant trees that vary in size. \nMangroves have adapted to living in salt and brackish water conditions.\nThey require slow currents and fine sediment in which to set their roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Did you know that mangroves store more carbon than\nterrestrial forests? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n They have\nthe capacity to take far more carbon out of the atmosphere than terrestrial\nforests; a patch of mangroves could absorb 10 times the carbon of a similarly\nsized patch of terrestrial forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite the\nfact that they help in fighting climate change, they are not immune from the\neffects of it. They require the exact\namount of sea-water. They drown in a too\nmuch and they dry down in too little sea water. \nWith water level rising, mangroves existence is at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mangroves\nalso fight coastal erosion<\/strong>. The dense root systems of\nmangrove forests trap sediments flowing down rivers and off the land. This helps\nstabilizes the coastline and prevents erosion from waves and storms.
